Cruising the boulevard, walking the shopping mall and sipping on a cold and frothy Orange Julius. That’s one of my fondest memories. When my husband and I began dating 18 years ago there were two things we would almost always get at the shopping mall: a Cinnabon Cinnamon Roll and an Orange Julius.
I love an Orange Julius. The special way the orange juices and frothy layers separate into orange creamsicle layers is truly unique. We enjoyed this sweet refreshing treat so much that I began making our own pitchers of the stuff right after we got married, when we got our first apartment.
This delectable combination featured fresh squeezed orange juice-trust me, no other is better, sweet sugar and a bit of egg whites for frothiness. Well I’ve been blessed to have plenty of juicy oranges on hand lately from my in-laws abundance on their orange trees, but unfortunately, raw, even pasteurized egg whites are not in my pregnant forte. So I came up with an easy and just as frothy substitute.
Orange Julius Smoothie
1 1/2 cups fresh squeezed orange juice, about 4-5 oranges
1 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 Tb whipped topping mix
1 1/2 cups ice
You just squeeze all your oranges until you get 1 1/2 cups of juice.
Pour in 1 cup of cold water and 1/4 cup of sugar. Blend this up until the sugar dissolves and pour in 1 1/2 cups of ice. Add the vanilla and blend until the ice has broken down into a slushy consistency.
Add 2 Tb of whipped topping mix and blend to combine.
I love those orange layers of texture!
Get some fancy glasses ready if you wish.
And pour in the smoothie.
My favorite part about this smoothie is making it with my kids. They love to squeeze the oranges and they especially love to drink this gluten free and autism friendly concoction.

- 2 Tb whipped topping mix
- 1 1/2 cups ice
- Squeeze the oranges to make 1 1/2 cups of juice.
- Add the water and sugar and blender in a blender.
- Add the ice and vanilla and blend until slushie.
- Add the whipped topping mix and blend until combined.
- Pour into each of 4 glasses and serve immediately.
